Flag Display Project
This excellent fund-raising project involves selling $30 per year subscriptions
to individuals and businesses in the McAlester area. Some subscribers have paid
to have a large number of these Flags displayed in the center median park of
Carl Albert Parkway in downtown McAlester. Our club provides a large United
States flag, on a 10-foot wooden pole, which is installed in a metal tube sunk
into the ground. Rotarians sell the Flag Display subscriptions, install the
metal tubes in the ground (the tubes are capped when the flag pole is not being
used), and insert the flagpoles into the tubes for six (6) days each year. The
Flag Display days are McAlester's Armed Forces Day (usually the first Saturday
in May), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Flag Day (June 14th), Independence
Day (the 4th of July), Labor Day (first Monday in September) and Veterans' Day
(November 11th, formerly known as Armistice Day from World War I). Dedicated
McAlester Rotarians sacrifice part of their own holidays to put up the Flags
around town around daybreak and then take the Flags down around sunset on the
designated days. For information about subscribing yourself, contact any McAlester
Rotarian or send an e-mail
to the Webmaster. Rotarians George Lampton and Angie Nelson lead this project
for our Club.
