The Rotary Club of McAlester is one of more than 29,000 Rotary
Clubs around the world. From the beginning in Chicago, Illinois, where Rotary
was founded by Paul Harris along with 3 other men in 1903, Rotary has grown
to more than a million members, located in nearly every country around the
globe. Extensive information about Rotary - what it is, what it does, how
it works - is easily found in the webpages of Rotary
International (q.v.). Rotary is a service club above all, while
providing fellowship among Rotarians, local and worldwide, who are
united to work together in a sincere, non-partisan, non-sectarian effort to
improve the local community and the whole world. Membership in Rotary carries
certain obligations and responsibilities
which are an inherent part of Rotary and which have been developed over many
decades by Rotary International as the best way for Rotary Clubs and individual
Rotarians to achieve the Object of Rotary.

Up with Trees Update
The Trees are looking good, west of town.
Slow down and take a look when you pass that way.
There were 30 to 35 to help with the tree planting in June of 2005

when a couple of dozen good people from the Tulsa
Up With Trees group and the Up With Trees Committee of the Rotary
Club of Tulsa (the old downtown club and the largest club in our Rotary
District) joined with 30 McAlester Rotarians and a few others to plant nearly
3 dozen new trees at Rotary Park, to help replace some of those destroyed in
the terrible ice storm of last December.
The tree-planters! Front and center are District Governor Don Wasson, McAlester
Rotary Club past-president Bob Saunier (longtime leader of the Rotary Park project
over the past 3 decades), and our Rotary Youth Exchange student Veronica Pradoborja
(her Rotarian host Ronnie May brought her along to enjoy the beautiful spring
day at Rotary Park).

Governor’s Message

As I begin my trek to the 77 clubs in our District 6110, I am
fi lled with excitement when I consider the great good that can be
accomplished by the 5,200 (or so) Rotarians in our four-state area. I ask
each one of you to keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I travel around
the district. I realize clearly that very little can be accomplished by one
individual. As your new District Governor, I am one small soldier in the
army of Rotary. I need each one of you on board with us to chart the course
and reach the goal. Every club is important, whether you have 15 members or
500. Every Rotarian is significant because there is work for us all. Please
review these goals that I set forth at our District Assembly and strive with
me as we work for ROTARY…FOR A BETTER WORLD.
My number one objective and greatest hope is that I can somehow inspire,
energize, and mobilize every one of our 5,200+ members to join hearts and
hands and work together as one family to overcome our natural tendency
toward Service For Self and truly dedicate ourselves to Service Above Self.
Strive for a net increase of one new member in each club, for it is through
a growing membership that we can grow our service. Membership is the
lifeblood of Rotary!
Meet or exceed the Annual Programs Fund Foundation goal of an average of
$100 per member per year for our District. This is less than one cup of
coffee every other week at your local Starbucks. Not really a sacrifice is
it?
Continue to increase our growing list of Paul Harris Society members,
Benefactors, and Bequest Society members.
Encourage more members to use EFT to meet their Every Rotarian Every giving
goal. It’s painless, and this way you won’t forget to give.
Provide dictionaries to every third grader in District 6110, including rural
area schools, with every club in the District participating. It’s the best
investment in the world of education, and the dividends are great.
Seek opportunities to introduce adult literacy projects in District 6110
clubs. Literacy is a powerful antidote for poverty.
Aim for 50 new water wells in Nicaragua in 2006–07 Rotary year. Help a
country fight disease, grow their own food, and get back their dignity.
Partner with the Wheelchair Foundation and give the gift of mobility to
those who have never known it.
Host more students in our District for Youth Exchange and recruit more
outbound students to meet new friends around the world. Our tomorrows depend
on how well we forge these international bonds today.
Warmly welcome our GSE team from Romania and recruit an enthusiastic group
of young professionals to represent us in our partner country.
Insure that every president-elect honors his or her commitment to attend our
Mid America PETS to prepare responsibly for his/her year of leadership.
Encourage president nominees to attend for better preparation for their
presidential year. A president cannot adequately lead a club without
instruction and the support of other leaders. We will host this meeting in
our District this Rotary year at Fort Smith.

My year as president-elect was busy but immensely rewarding.
I traveled to more than 60 different cities and approximately 20 countries
in all corners of the world and met thousands of Rotarians. Some of the
countries I visited included the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore,
Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Mexico.
Furthermore, I met with old friends and discovered new ones at the always
remarkable and inspiring Rotary convention, which this year was in Malmö,
Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark.
Everywhere I went, Rotarians impressed me with their energy and compassion
for their club projects, and I was touched by the kindness of their
hospitality. Of the many different cultures that I experienced, I noticed
many similarities among Rotarians. To be a Rotarian means making the world a
better place through compassion and being able to Lead the Way one positive
act at a time.
I look forward to serving you as your Rotary International president for a
year, starting 1 July. As I continue with my travels — which in July and
August include France, India, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa — I
know you will keep affirming my belief in the power of Rotary and ordinary
people coming together for a common belief in helping humankind. |
